Seven things to consider
1. How long does it take to build a headstone?
The time taken depends on the colour, size, and complexity of the headstone. Some simple designs are carried in stock and can be produced quicker. We tell customers it can take up to 4 months just for a headstone to be delivered to our premises.
2. How long should I wait before ordering a headstone Peak District and Derbyshire?
Amongst the things to consider when buying a headstone is that after a burial the grave will need at least 6 months to settle before we can erect a headstone. However, the headstone can be ordered at any time. So that it is ready to be placed on the grave when it is settled.
3. Which Cemetery/Churchyard is the headstone being placed in?
This is a big factor in the decision of which headstone you choose. Each cemetery will have its’ own rules and regulations when it comes to size, colour, material, and inscription allowed. Once we know where the headstone is going, we can advise what is likely to be approved and what is not. Most cemeteries will have their rules and regulations available online.
4. What paperwork will be needed when ordering a headstone?
There will be several documents from your chosen Stone mason including a quote for the work being carried out (these can be subject to change if the design/work changes), a proof of the wording, this needs to be checked carefully. Finally, there will likely be a document from the cemetery/church that would need a signature. It is worth noting that not all churchyards will require this.
5. Can an additional inscription be added to an existing headstone?
Yes, you can add to an existing headstone providing there is space to accommodate the new inscription. Stone masons will try their best to match the existing font. When ordering a new memorial, it is a good idea to think of future internment in the grave and names to be added to the stone.
6. Can I add a Photograph to the headstone?
Adding a photograph is a personal choice, if allowed by the Cemetery/Church. This is something your stone would need to ask the Cemetery/Church, some may allow photographs, but may stipulate certain criteria i.e: size, colour/black and white photograph.
7. How much does a headstone cost?
This is dependent on several factors. Where you are based will be a factor.
As well as location, variables can include size, colour, material, design and number of letters. The average cost of a headstone is between £1,500.00 and £1,800.00. This would include inscription, fitting, and any cemetery fees to pay. Cemetery fees are paid for permission to erect a headstone or add an inscription to an existing headstone.
